The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) has joined forces with the Kaduna State Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (KADSAMHSA) to train over two hundred (200) head teachers on strategies for preventing substance abuse and promoting mental well being in schools.
The one day training, held at Rimi College, Kaduna, brought together head teachers from public primary and junior secondary schools across the state. The programme was designed to equip participants with the skills to detect early signs of drug use and mental health challenges among pupils, while also promoting safer and more supportive learning environments.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman, Mubarak Mohammed, highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration in achieving comprehensive educational development and enhancing students’ academic performance, in line with the priorities of Governor Uba Sani’s administration.
Experts in various fields of mental health facilitated sessions on commonly abused substances among adolescents, recognizing behavioural indicators of mental health issues, referral processes, and age appropriate prevention approaches.
This initiative forms part of Kaduna State’s broader efforts to combat substance abuse and strengthen mental health support for young people through coordinated action involving schools, families, and communities.

Hauwa Mohammed
Public Affairs Officer, KADSUBEB
